SIGNIFICANCE & STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE

A landmark in India's highway engineering

The Chenani–Nashri Tunnel has transformed connectivity along the Jammu–Srinagar highway by providing an all-weather route through the lower Himalayas. The tunnel bypasses the difficult, snow- and landslide-prone sections around Kud, Patnitop and Batote, reducing travel distance and travel time between Jammu and Srinagar. Government sources state that the project reduces the distance by around 31 km and travel time by up to two hours. Beyond mobility, the project supports tourism, trade and economic activity across Jammu & Kashmir by improving the reliability of a critical national highway.

Geography & Regional Impact

Located in the Lower Himalayan region of Jammu & Kashmir, the tunnel connects Chenani in Udhampur district with Nashri in Ramban district. The surrounding terrain is mountainous and historically exposed to snowfall, landslides and other weather-related disruptions. The tunnel therefore represents not just a transport asset, but an important resilience intervention for the region's highway network.
